کمبود آب یکی از مهم‌ترین چالش‌های بخش کشاورزی به‌ویژه در نواحی خشک و نیمه‌خشک دنیاست. با توجه به پتانسیل بالای برخی از گیاهان دارویی برای کشت در شرایط تنش‌زای محیطی، کشت این گیاهان در زمین‌های کم‌بهره می‌تواند مورد توجه قرار گیرد. از این رو به منظور کاهش اثرات منفی کمبود آب بر رشد گیاه چای ترش (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.)، آزمایشی به‌صورت فاکتوریل در قالب طرح کاملاً تصادفی با سه تکرار در گلخانه تحقیقاتی دانشکده کشاورزی دانشگاه بیرجند در سال 1396 انجام شد. تیمارهای آزمایش شامل مقدار آب آبیاری در چهار سطح (40، 60، 80 و 100 درصد ظرفیت زراعی) و تیمار آبیاری با آب مغناطیسی در سه سطح (آب غیرمغناطیسی (شاهد)، آب مغناطیسی شده با یک، و دو بار عبور از میدان مغناطیسی) بود. نتایج آزمایش نشان‌ داد که اثرات تیمارهای مقدار آب آبیاری بر تمامی صفات اندازه‌گیری شده و تیمارهای آبیاری مغناطیسی بر تمامی صفات به‌استثنای تعداد برگ معنی‌دار بودند. همچنین، اثرات متقابل تیمارهای مقدار آب آبیاری × آبیاری مغناطیسی بر صفات ارتفاع گیاه، تعداد غوزه در بوته، وزن تر و خشک اندام هوایی، وزن خشک ریشه و وزن خشک کاسبرگ معنی‌دار بدست آمد. کاهش مقدار آب آبیاری از 100% به 40% ظرفیت زراعی باعث کاهش عدد اسپد، قطر ساقه، تعداد برگ و وزن تازه ریشه به ترتیب به میزان 34.7%، 23%، 40.6% و 27.6% شد. نتایج مقایسه میانگین اثرات متقابل مقدار آب آبیاری × آبیاری مغناطیسی نشان داد که آبیاری با آب دو بار مغناطیسی شده باعث بهبود تمامی صفات در مقایسه با آبیاری با آب معمولی شد. بنابراین به نظر می‌رسد که کاربرد آبیاری مغناطیسی می‌تواند به‌عنوان یکی از راهکارهای کاهش اثرات منفی ناشی از کمبود آب مدنظر قرار گیرد.
