Background and objectives: Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea L.) is one of the most wellknown medicinal plant species with high economic value worldwide. In Iran, this species' roots and shoots are used in herbal medicines. Many types of phytomedicine are commercially produced from Echinacea aerial portions for boosting the nonspecific immune system and treating the common cold. Environmental and health costs of chemical fertilizers have led researchers to meet plant nutritional needs using chemical, organic and biological fertilizers. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of organic and biological fertilizers on morphological traits, shoot and root dry matter, and essential oil percentage and yield in the leaves and stems of coneflower plants.Methodology: This experiment was conducted on a randomized complete block design with three replications at the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands, Iran, in 2018-2019. Treatments included control, NPK (N50P25K25; N75P35K35 and N100P75K75 Kg.ha-1), manure (30, 60 and 90 ton.ha-1), vermicompost (5, 10, and 15 ton.ha-1), N50P25K25 fertilizer + 30 ton.ha-1 manure, N50P25K25 + 5 ton.ha-1 vermicompost, biological fertilizers including Glomus intraradaices + G. mosseae, Azospirillum + Pseudomonas, Thiobacillus + 5 ton.ha-1 vermicompost and Thiobacillus + 250 Kg.ha-1 of sulfur (S). Before applying fertilizer treatments, a soil analysis was done. After applying fertilizer treatments, the physical and chemical properties of the soil were also determined. The treatments were selected based on the fertilizer requirements of the plant as well as soil test results. Parameters such as plant height, leaf, stem, and flower numbers, root penetration depth, root volume, leaf, stem, root, and flower dry matter, leaf, stem, and flower essential oil, and essential oil yield of leaves, stems, and flowers were evaluated. At the full flowering stage, samples were taken from aerial segments of plants in all treatment groups. After shade-drying, the samples through a Clevenger-type apparatus were hydro-distillated to obtain the essential oil. The oil percentage, as well as yield, was calculated based on the dry weight.Results: The results showed that the highest leaf and stem dry matter was observed in the 15-ton.ha-1 vermicompost treatment. A 5-ton.ha-1 vermicompost treated with NPK fertilizers displayed the highest flower dry matter. On the other hand, the highest root dry matter was obtained in the treatment with 30 tons.ha-1 manure + NPK fertilizers. The highest flower essential oils yield was obtained in ton.ha-1 manure + NPK fertilizers. The highest leaf + stem oil yields were found at the flowering stage in 15 tons.ha-1 vermicompost. Also, NPK treatment + 30 tons.ha-1 of manure resulted in the highest yield of flower essential oil. 15-ton.ha-1 vermicompost treatment yielded the highest stem and leaf essential oil yield. Only the organic fertilizer group (CM vs. V5) and the biofertilizer group (GM and GI vs. T) showed an increase in flower essential oil yield compared to the other nutritional treatments. In the leaf+stem essential oil yield results, all comparisons between treatment groups showed a significant effect, except for the organic fertilizer group (CM vs. V5). Compared to the NPK group, the biofertilizer and organic fertilizer group yielded the highest leaf+stem essential oil yield.Conclusion: It was concluded that biological fertilizers treatment combined with organic fertilizers could be a suitable alternative to chemicals in the sustainable production of this valuable medicinal plant. These findings suggested that biofertilizers and organic fertilizers can benefit Echinacea purpurea cultivation because, when combined, they enhance the essential oil percentage and yield.

To investigate the response of some quantitative and qualitative characteristics of peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) to organic fertilizers under low water stress, a factorial experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications in the research farm of the Faculty of Agriculture of Urmia University in 2017-2018 crop year. Experimental treatments included organic fertilizer at five levels (control, cattle manure (20 ton ha-1), poultry manure (7 ton ha-1), vermicompost (10 ton ha-1), and compost (15 ton ha-1)) and soil moisture at three levels (50 (severe stress), 70 (moderate stress), and 90% (control: without stress) of field capacity). Low water stress decreased the content of leaf phosphorus or potassium, leaf phenols or flavonoids, and leaf relative water content and increased the leaf essential oil yield at full flowering stage. The highest amount of essential oil (1.58%) was observed under moderate stress conditions. Poultry manure and vermicompost significantly increased the amount of nitrogen, protein, and percentage of DPPH radical scavenging of leaves under low water stress compared to without stress conditions. The highest yield of essential oil (32.34 kg ha-1), stem dry weight (852.53 kg ha-1), leaf dry weight (1010.40 kg ha-1), and aerial parts dry weight (1863.93 kg ha-1) was obtained in the poultry manure treatment under optimal irrigation. Overall, organic fertilizers application under low water stress could be recommended to increase the plant yield and achieve sustainable agriculture.

To investigate the effects of different nutritional treatments on morphological characteristics, essential oil yield, and the amount of some elements in the soil and plant branches of Satureja khuzistanica Jamzad, an experiment was conducted as a randomized complete block design with three replications and 14 nutritional treatments during two growing seasons (2017-2018, 2018-2019). Treatments included 1- C (control), 2- NPK (Chemical fertilizer 50-25-25 kg.ha-1), 3- CM30, 4- CM60 (CM: Cattle manure 30 and 60 ton.ha-1), 5- CM30+NPK, 6- CM60+NPK, 7- V5 (Vermicompost 50 ton.ha-1), 8- V5+NPK, 9- GM (Glomus mosseae), 10- GI (Glomus intraradices), 11- S0+T, 12- S250+T, 13- S500+T (S: Sulfur 0, 250, and 500 kg.ha-1, T: Thiobacillus), and 14- V5+T. The analysis of variance showed the significant effect (p < /em>≤0.01) of year×fertilizer treatments on the all morphological characteristics, percentage and essential oil yield, and the amount of potassium and sulfur of plant branches. The highest plant height in the first and second years was related to the CM30+NPK and CM60 treatments, respectively. The highest number of branches in the first and second years was observed in the CM30+NPK and GM treatments, respectively. The CM30+NPK treatment had the highest shade width in both years. Also, the highest amount of dry matter of flowering branches in the first and second years was related to the CM30+NPK and V5+T treatments, respectively. According to the results, the highest essential oil percentage in the first and second years was observed in the GM and S0 + T treatments, respectively. The application of V5+NPK and V5 +T treatments significantly increased the essential oil yield in the first and second years, respectively. The results also showed that the highest potassium content of branches in the first and second years was related to the GI and V5 + NPK treatments, respectively. Also, the highest sulfur content of branches in the first and second years was obtained in the V5 and S500 + T treatments, respectively. In general, the present study showed that the use of biofertilizers increases the efficiency of essential oil percentage and the amount of nutrients in this plant. Also, it could be recommended to use vermicompost along with the chemical and biological fertilizers to increase the essential oil yield of Satureja khuzistanica.

The experiment was conducted to study the effects of water deficit stress and fertilizer sources on characteristics of Echinacea purpurea L., in a split plots design with three replications at the research farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran during two years of 2016 and 2017. Irrigation consisted of three levels of non-stress (control), moderate, and severe moisture stress and fertilizer consisted of eight levels of complete fertilizer (NPK), vermicompost, humic acid, humic acid+NPK, humic acid+vermicompost, NPK+vermicompost, NPK+vermicompost+humic acid, and non-use of fertilizer (control). The single effects of deficit irrigation and fertilizer treatments were significant (p≤0.01) on the stem height, number of stems and flowers plant-1, biomass dry weight, total chlorophylls a and b, and proline content; however, their interaction effects were only significant (p≤0.01) on phenolic compounds of the leaves. In relation to the single effects of irrigation treatments, the highest height and number of stems, number of flowers plant-1, and biomass dry weight was observed in non-water stress treatments and the lowest amount of these characteristics was observed in severe water stress treatments. The highest and lowest proline content was shown in severe and non-stress treatments, respectively, and the highest and lowest total chlorophylls a and b were obtained in non-stress and severe moisture stress, respectively. Regarding the single effects of fertilizer treatments, there was no significant difference in plant height between fertilizer levels; however, all of them had a significant difference with control treatment (no fertilization). The difference between fertilizer treatments was significant in the number of stems and flowers plant-1 and biomass dry weight. The highest number of stems and flowers was obtained in humic acid+vermicompost treatment and the highest amounts of biomass dry weight were obtained in vermicompost+NPK treatment. The lowest values of these traits were observed in control (non-fertilization). The highest and lowest amounts of total chlorophylls a and b were obtained in vermicompost+NPK and control treatments, respectively, and the highest and lowest proline values were obtained in control and vermicompost treatments, respectively. The highest phenolic compounds were observed in humic acid+vermicompost+NPK and humic acid+NPK treatments, both of which under severe moisture stress, and the lowest one in non-stress and non-fertilization (control) treatment.

In order to investigate the effect of vermicompost, biochar and mycorrhizal symbiosis on some qualitative and quantitative traits of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) as a medicinal plant, a split factorial experiment was implemented in the form of randomized complete blocks design with three replications. The study was conducted at the experimental field of Agriculture and Natural Resources Faculty of Islamic Azad University, Karaj Branch, Mahdasht, Iran, in 2016. The factors were characterized as vermicompost in three levels (0, 6 and 12 ton/ha) as the main factor, biochar in three levels (0, 6 and 12 ton/ha) and mycorrhiza in two levels (non inoculation and inoculation) as the sub factors. Results showed that the main effect of factors on the mycorrhizal symbiosis percentage and grain phosphorus content was significant (P˂0.01). Analysis of variance between the interaction effects of vermicompost × biochar were significant on the LAI, dry fruit yield, grain yield and dry weight ratio of grain to fruit (P˂0.01) as well as on the number of lateral stem (P˂0.05). Mean comparison of the interaction effect of vermicompost × biochar showed that the application of 12 (ton/ha) vermicompost along with 12 (ton/ha) biochar resulted in the highest amount of LAI (12.28), number of lateral stem (13.33 number/ plant), dry fruit yield (619.51 kg/ha), grain yield (410.02 kg/ha) and dry weight ratio of grain to fruit (66.17%). Therefore, the use of vermicompost along with biochar is recommended in production of pumpkin.

In order to evaluate the effects of different fertilizer systems and irrigation water on some phytochemical characteristics of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.), a field experiment was conducted at the University of Jiroft during 2013 and 2014. The study was conducted as split plot based on a randomized complete blocks design with three replications. Three irrigation levels (100%, 80% and 60% of crop water requirement) were assigned as main plot factor. Four fertilizers including mycorrhiza, vermicompost, cow manure, and chemical fertilizer (NPK) were allocated as sub plot factor. The results indicated that fertilizer treatments and different irrigation water levels had significant effect on total phenol, anthocyanin, acidity of calyx, seed protein and seed oil. The highest and lowest anthocyanin (3.05 and 2.78 ml.gr-1), total phenol (12.52 and 12.90 ml.gr-1) and acidity of calyx (0.81 and 0.87 gr.100 gr dry weight) belonged to vermicompost and cow manure. Also, 60% and 100% crop water requirement produced the highest and lowest anthocyanin (3 and 2.19 ml.gr-1), total phenol (13.04 and 10.81 ml.gr-1) and seed protein (20.90% and 20.01%). Furthermore, the interaction effect of fertilizer systems and irrigation levels had a significant effect on anthocyanin content. The interaction effect of irrigation levels and year had a significant effect on oil seed. Vitamin C was not affected by experimental treatments.

This research was aimed to investigate the effects of plant density and organic and chemical fertilizers on some phytochemical characteristics of Iranian ox-tongue (Echium amoenum Fisch. & Mey.). The study was conducted as a split plot experiment based on RCBD design with three replications, conducted in 2011-2014, in Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran. The main and sub plots included three plant densities (10, 5 and 3 plants per m2) and three types of organic fertilizers and one type of chemical fertilizer (compost, vermicompost, cow manure, nitrogen chemical fertilizer and control), respectively. The results showed that the highest antioxidant activity was obtained in a density of 10 plants per m2 (79 mg/ml) and the highest total phenols was observed in a density of 5 plants per m2 (51 mg GAE/g flower DW). Compost, vermicompost, cow manure and chemical fertilizer increased total phenols to 51, 35, 40 and 63%, respectively compared to control. Application of vermicompost and cow manure in a density of 3 plants per m2 increased total flavonoid up to 39 and 38%, respectively compared to control. The highest total anthocyanin was obtained in a density of 5 plants per m2. Vermicompost and cow manure increased the seed oil (10 and 13%), and seed protein content (34 and 13%), respectively compared to control. In general, according to the findings of this research, it seems that the use of eco-friendly inputs and determining the optimal density of Iranian ox-tongue could result in improving the quality and health of product and minimizing the damage caused by chemical inputs.

In order to study the effects of organic and bio-fertilizers on some quantitative and qualitative characters of dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.), an experiment was conducted as randomized complete blocks design with eight treatments and three replications. The study was conducted in the Research Field Station of Ran Agricultural Company in Firouzkuh, 2015. The treatments were 20 t/ha manure, 10 t/ha vermicompost, biofertilizer (Nitroxin + Bio Super Phosphat), 10 t/ha manure + 5 t/ha vermicompost, 20 t/ha manure + biofertilizer, 10 t/ha vermicompost + biofertilizer, 10 t/ha manure + 5 t/ha vermicompost + biofertilizer and chemical fertilizer (NPK: 80, 70 and 80 kg/ha). The results showed that treatments had significant effects on the traits studied except plant height, so that the highest flowering shoot no./plant, flower dry weight, plant dry weight and dry flowering yield were obtained with integrated application of 10 t/ha manure and 5 t/ha vermicompost. In addition, the highest essential oil content and geraniol in the essential oil were obtained in the treatment of application of 10 t/ha vermicompost.

In order to study the effects of zeolite, bio and organic fertilizers on the growth, yield and yield components of German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) in organic cultivation, an experiment was conducted at the research field of Tarbiat Modares University in 2005. The factors were PGPR inoculums (inoculated and no inoculated), zeolite (0 and 9 ton/ha) and vermicompost (0, 5, 10 ton/ha). The experimental design was factorial in a randomized complete blocks design with twelve treatments and three replications. Mean comparison was carried out using Duncan’s multiple range test (at 5% level). Results showed that the highest value of flower yield (358.13), biological yield (1572.09), number of flower per plant (61.09), flower diameter (21.84) and height (45.51) were obtained with PGPR inoculums. Zeolite also showed significant effects on mentioned traits except flower diameter and harvest index. With increasing of vermicompost levels, all traits were increased as the highest value of flower yield (434.22), biological yield (1814.30), number of flower per plant (72.71), flower diameter (22.35) and height (47.91) were obtained with application of 10 ton/ha vermicompost. In addition, there were positive and synergistic interactions between vermicompost combined with PGPR and vermicompost combined with zeolite on dry flower yield, as the highest flower yield was obtained in v3b2 and v3z2 treatments with 448.73 and 448.7kg/ha, respectively.

In order to investigate the effect of vermicompost, mycorrhiza and semimycorrhiza(Piriformospora indica) on some micro and macro elements of Balm (Melissa officinalis L.), this experiment was conducted in the Alborz research station, Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands, Karaj, Iran, in 2012. The experiment was conducted as factorial in a randomized complete blocks design with three replications. Factors included vermicompost at three levels (0, 5 and 10 t/ha), and inoculation with biofertilizers at four levels (control, inoculation with Glomus mosseae+G. intraradices, Piriformospora indica, and Glomus mosseae+G. intraradices+Piriformospora indica). Results indicated that vermicompost and biofertilizer significantly affected the content of potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, manganese and cooper (p<0.01). Moreover, vermicompost application significantly affected nitrogen content at pp<0.01). According to mean comparisons of simple effects, the highest content of nitrogen (2.83%) and potassium (1.66%) was obtained from application of 10 t/ha vermicompost. The highest content of phosphorus (0.53%) belonged to the use of mycorrhiza (Glomus mosseae+G. intraradices). Mean comparisons of the interaction effects indicated that the highest content of phosphorus was obtained from application of 10 t/ha vermicompost×mycorrhiza (Glomus mosseae+G. intraradices). The highest content of calcium (0.77%) was obtained from 5ton/ha vermicompost × non-inoculation. The highest content of magnesium (0.6%) was obtained from the treatments of no vermicompost × mycorrhiza (Glomus mosseae+G. intraradices) and 10 t/ha vermicompost×mycorrhiza (Glomus mosseae+G. intraradices). The highest amount of iron (925.6ppm) was obtained from the treatment of 5 t/ha vermicompost × mycorrhiza (Glomus mosseae+G. intraradices). Results indicated that the use ofmycorrhizae and vermicompost could increase the uptake of most elements in the study species.

To study the effects of vermicompost and foliar application of amino acids and urea on quantity and quality of chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.), an experiment was conducted at RAN Field Research Station in Firouzkuh, Iran in 2012. The factors were vermicompost (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12t/ha) and foliar spraying (non-spraying or control, amino acid and urea spraying). The experimental design was factorial based on a randomized complete blocks design with 15 treatments and three replications. Results showed that the highest plant height (35.27cm), flower number per plant (181.75), and dry flower yield (2053.7kg/ha) were obtained by urea foliar application. While, the highest essential oil (0.59%), and chamazulene (7.13%), essential oil yield (11.98kg/ha) and chamazulen yield (854.17g/ha) were obtained by amino acid spraying on the plants. The application of vermicompost at a rate of 12 t ha-1 could increase all measured traits significantly. The results of interaction effects showed that the application of vermicompost at a rate of 12 t ha-1 and foliar application of amino acid had positive and significant effects on dry flower yield and chamazulen yield.

Bio-fertilizers are one of the most useful resources to improve the soil quality and increased yield in different plants. In order to study the effect of different levels of vermicompost and mycorrhizal fungi on essential oil content and uptake of some elements in cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.), a factorial experiment based on randomized complete blocks design with twelve treatments and three replications was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Faculty of Agriculture, Yasouj University, during 2012-2013. Experimental treatments consisted of three levels of vermicompost (0, 5 and 10 tons per hectare), and four levels of mycorrhizal fungi (no application, application of Glomus mossae, application of Glomus intraradices and both species) in the soil. Results indicated that the most content of essential oil was obtained from the application of 10 tons vermicompost and Glomus intraradices (3.13%). In addition, the highest content of grain phosphorus (0.26%) and grain nitrogen (1.43%) belonged to the treatment of 10 tons vermicompost and combined application of Glomus mossae and Glomus intraradices. The highest yield of essential oil was obtained from 10 tons vermicompost and application of Glomus mossae. Overall, the results of this experiment showed that using of vermicompost and mycorrhiza can improve the content and yield of essential oil and uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in cumin.

Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) quantitative and qualitative yield was assessed in a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design with three replications. The factors included NPK fertilizers at three levels (0, 50 and 100 percent of the recommended amount of fertilizer) and non-chemical fertilizers in four levels (no fertilizer, vermicompost, bio fertilizers containing Pseudomonas and Bacillus, and integrated application of vermicompost and bio fertilizers). Results showed that the interaction effect of chemical and non-chemical fertilizers was significant on all parameters and fertilization increased the quality and quantity yield of saffron compared to control. Integrated application of 50% of the amounts of chemical fertilizers, vermicompost and bacteria was the superior treatment to increase stigma dry weight, stigma yield, crocin percentage, picrocrocin percentage and safranal percentage by 2.03, 4.65, 0.83, 1.10 and 1.46 fold, respectively in comparison with control. Although the effectiveness of integrated application of bacteria with 0% and 100% chemical fertilizers on crocin content, pure vermicompost and integrated application of bacteria with 50% and 100% chemical fertilizers on picrocrocin content and pure bacteria on safranal content were more than those of integrated application of vermicompost, bio and 50% chemical fertilizer, the greatest impacts of recent treatment on flower yield, stigma yield and stigma ingredients led to introduce it as the superior treatment. The effectiveness of this treatment compared to 0%, 50% and 100% of chemical fertilizer application on dry stigma was 50.95%, 20.48% and 12.86%, respectively.

In order to study the effects of biofertilizers on the quantity and quality of John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum L.), an experiment was conducted at Shahed University in 2010. The studied factors included phosphatic biofertilizer (inoculated and non-inoculated), phosphorous fertilizer at three levels (0, 100, 200 kg/h) and vermicompost (0, 5, 10 ton/h). The study was conducted in a factorial experiment in the form of a randomized complete blocks design (RCBD) with three replications. In addition, one plot was considered as control group in each replication to be compared with other plots in which only chemical fertilizers (NPK: 250, 200 and 100 kg/h) were used. Results showed that the highest biological yield, flowering shoot yield, and hypericin yield were obtained by applying vermicompost at 5 ton/ha, and there was no significant difference between the application rates of 5 and 10 ton/ha. The interaction effects of phosphatic biofertilizer (inoculated) and phosphorous fertilizer were significant, so that the highest biological yield, flowering shoot yield, hypericin yield and chlorophyll a were obtained by applying 100 kg/ha P2O5 plus phosphatic biofertilizer, having no significant difference with the application rate of 200 kg/ha P2O5. Significant differences were found between biofertilizer treatments and control group. According to the obtained results, it seems that biofertilizers can be considered as a replacement for chemical fertilizers.

To study the effects of vermicompost and biofertilizer on quantity and quality (anethole, gama-himachalene and estragole content) of essential oil in anise (Pimpinella anisum L.), an experiment was conducted at Homand Research Station in Damavand, Iran in 2009. The factors were vermicompost (0, 5, 10 t/ha) and phosphatic biofertilizer (non-inoculated, inoculated seed and inoculated seed + spraying on soil in stem elongation stage). In order to improve seed yield and enhance the quality of medicinal plants, the establishment of sustainable agricultural aystems and utilization bio-fertilizers is considered of great importance. In order to study the effect of bio-fertilizers on yield and yield components of pot marigold (Calendula officinalis L.), an experiment was carried out as factorial in randomized complete blocks with 8 treatments and 3 replications in 2010. Treatments included compost (vermi-compost, city refuse compost, no organic fertilizer, granular organic fertilizer) and phosphate bio fertilizer (inoculated, not inoculated). Mean comparison was carried out using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at 5% level). Results showed that phosphate bio fertilizer had not significant effects on plant height, flower yield, number of flower and grain harvest index but flower diameter, number of lateral stems, biomass yield, seed yield and flower harvest index wrer significantly affected. Also, significant differences were observed in most of the traits between treatments and control (no fertilizer, no inoculation). Biological fertilizers significantly increased plant height, total biomass yield, seed weight and harvest index however, flower diameter, number of secondary stems, dried flower yield, flower number per square meter and seed yield were not affected by treatments. The highest values of most of the traits were obtained at vermi-compost and phosphate bio fertilizer, affecting the yield components and seed yield of pot marigold positively.

The main objective of this study was to assess the effects of different levels of vermicompost and nitrogen on qualitative and quantitative yield of chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.). The experimental design was factorial based on Randomized Complete Blocks Design (RCBD) with three replications, conducted in Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands during spring 2010. Treatments were consisted of four levels of vermicompost (5, 10, 15 and 20 tons per hectare) and nitrogen of four levels (30, 60, 90 and 120 kg per hectare). The measured traits included number of flowers per plant, diameter of flower, dry and fresh flower yield, essential oil percentage and Chamazulene content in essential oil. Results showed that vermicompost had significant effects on dry flower weight and essential oil percentage (α ≤ 0.05%). In addition, it had significant effects on dry and fresh flower yield and Chamazulene (α ≤ 0.05%). The effect of nitrogen on the number of flower (α ≤ 0.05%) and essential oil percentage (α ≤ 0.01%) was significant. The results of interaction effects showed significant differences for the number of flower, dry flower yield, dry flower weight, essential oil percentage and Chamazulene.

Anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) is one of the aromatic and medicinal plants. Anethol is the most important component of its essential oil used in medicinal and food industries. The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of vermicompost levels (0, 5 and 10 t.ha-1), mixture of Azotobacter, Azospirillum and Pseudomonas (inoculation and not-inoculation) and zeolite (0 and 4.5 t.ha-1) on essential oil content, composition and macro element contents of Pimpinella anisum. Experimental design was randomized complete blocks with factorial arrangement. Field experiment was conducted at Sanandaj Agriculture Research Station, in 2009. The results showed that vermicompost application improved essential oil content and yield, anethol and methyl chavicol percentage, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content. Inoculating seeds with PGPR led to significant increment in all of the mentioned characters except for methyl cavicol percentage and potassium concentration. Zeolite application had significant effect on essential oil content, oil yield and anethol percentage but no significant effect on the other characters. The most favorable interaction treatment for essential oil production and phosphorus percentage was the PGPR inoculation combined with the highest level of vermicompost.

Dracocephalum moldavica L. is an annual species of the Lamiaceae family with local and global importance. The aerial parts of the plant containing essential oil used in medicinal, cosmetic and food industries. In order to study the effects of biofertilizers on quantity and quality of essential oil in Dragonhead including the content of the essential oil and the content of the geraniol, geranial and geranyl acetate in the essential oil, an experiment was conducted at Tarbiat Modarres University in 2009. The factors were vermicompost (0, 15, 30% V/pot), Azotobacter (inoculated and non-inoculated) and phosphatic biofertilizer (inoculated and non-inoculated). A factorial experimental design was applied in a randomized complete blocks with twelve treatments and three replications. Mean comparison was carried out using Tukey multiple range test at 5% level. Results showed that the highest essential oil content (0.74%) and geranyl acetate content in the essential oil (61.1%) were obtained at the third level of the Vermicompost treatment (30%). The highest geraniol and geranial content in the essential oil (24.2% and 18.2%) respectively were obtained with V15× B0 and V15×A0.

Application of Biofertilizers in a sustainable agriculture system improves sustainability of yield especially in medicinal plants production. Anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) is a medicinal plant containing essential oils especially in its seeds. In this reserach, the effects of vermicompost and phosphate biofertilizer on yield and yield components in anise including plant height, number of umbels per plant, 1000 grain-weight, biological yield and seed yield were studied. The experiment was carried out at Homand research station - Iran in 2009. The factors were vermicompost (0, 5, 10 ton/ha) and phosphate biofertilizer (non-inoculated, inoculated seed and inoculated seed + spraying on soil in stem elongation). The experiment design was factorial experiment based on randomized complete blocks design with nine treatments and three replications. Mean comparison was carried out using Duncan multiple range test (P<0.05). Results showed that the highest plant height, umbel no./plant, biological yield, and seed yield were obtained from consumption of 10 ton/ha vermicompost but 1000 grain- weight were not affected by vermicompost significantly. Phosphate biofertilizer also showed significant effects on umbel no./plant, biological yield and seed yield (except plant height and 1000 grain-weight). The maximum umbel no./plant, biological yield and seed yield were obtained from two times consumption of phosphate biofertilizer. There were positive and synergistic interactions between factors like interactions between factors on biological yield. According to the results of this study, application of 10 ton/ha vermicompost and two times consumption of phosphate biofertilizer were determined as the most suitable treatments.

In order to study the effects of biofertilizers on quantity and quality of essential oil in fennel containing essential oil content and anethole content, fenchone content and limonene content in essential oil, an experiment was conducted at Hamand Research station in Damavand in 2005 and 2006. The factors were mycorrhizal inoculation (inoculated and non-inoculated), phosphatic biofertilizer (0, 30, 60 kg/ha) and vermicompost (0, 5 , 10 ton/ha). The experiment design was factorial experiment in the base of randomized complete blocks design with eighteen treatments and three replications. In addition, one plot was allocated to control in each replication and only chemical fertilizers (NPK: 90, 60 and 90 kg/ha) were used. Data obtained from control plots were used for comparing other plots. Mean comparison was carried out using Duncan multiple range test (at 5% level). Results showed that the highest essential oil content in seed and anethole content in essential oil and the lowest fenchone content and limonene content in essential oil were obtained with mycorrhiza treatment. Phosphatic biofertilizer also showed significant effects on essential oil content and anethole and limonene contents in essential oil (except fenchone content). The maximum essential oil content in seed and anethole content in essential oil were related to the plots with consumption of 60 kg/ha. The lowest limonene content in essential oil was obtained with consumption of 30 kg/ha phosphatic biofertilizer. The highest essential oil content in seed and anethole content in essential oil and minimum fenchone content and limonene content in essential oil were obtained with consumption of 10 ton/ha vermicompost. Comparison of control versus biofertilizer treatments was significant, as two biofertilizer treatments include inoculation with mycorrhiza, application of 30 kg/ha phosphatic biofertilizer and 10 ton/ha vermicompost and inoculation with mycorrhiza and application of 60 kg/ha phosphatic biofertilizer and 10 ton/ha vermicompost in relation to quantity and quality of essential oil were better than control.

German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is one of the most important essential oil bearing plants that its essential oil constituent (Chamazulene, Bisabolol and Bisabolol oxide A, B) is used in different medicinal industries. In this research, effect of different levels of vermicompost and irrigation was evaluated on morphological characteristics and essential oil content of “Goral” an improved German chamomile. The research was conducted in pot and greenhouse system. The treatments included four amounts of vermicompost (0, 5, 10 and 15% w/w) and three irrigation regimes (2 mm per week, 4mm per 2 weeks and 2 mm per 2 weeks). The studied factors were flower dry yield, plant height, flowering time, anthodia height, anthodia diameter, oil content (%) and essential oil yield. The results indicated that the vermicompost application improved plant height, early flowering, flowers dry weight, anthodia height and diameter significantly. Irrigation also affects plant height, flower dry weight and flowering time significantly and 2mm irrigation per two weeks was the best method and 2mm irrigation per week increased anthodia height and diameter significantly. The interactions between vermicompost and irrigation was significant as plant height (64.82 cm), flowers dry weight(7.84 gr per pot) and flowering time (35.5 days) as concerned and the best treatments was 15% vermicompost and irrigation 2mm per two weeks. The highest essential oil yield detected in 10% vermicompost and irrigation 4mm per two weeks (2.23 mg/pot). According to the results, it appears that 15% vermicompost plus 2 mm irrigation per two weeks was the best treatment to produce the flower yield in Goral cultivar of German chamomile in organic system.

Biophosphate fertilizer also showed significant effects on plant height and biological yield. The maximum plant height and biological yield were obtained with consumption of 60 kg/ha from biophosphate fertilizer. The highest plant height, umbel no./plant, 1000 seed weight, biological yield and seed yield were obtained from vermicompost (10 ton/ha). Intractions of two factors of mycorrhizal inoculation and biophosphate fertilizer on 1000 seed weight and mycorrhizal inoculation and vermicompost on harvest index were significant. Comparison of control versus biofertilizer treatments was significant and umbel no./plant, biological yield and seed yield in two treatments of fifteenth (mycorrhizal inoculation-30 kg/ha biophosphate fertilizer-10 ton/ha vermicompost) and eighteenth (mycorrhizal inoculation-60 kg/ha biophosphate fertilizer-10 ton/ha vermicompost) from biofertilizer treatments were higher than that of control. There was a positive and significant correlation between seed yield with plant height, umbel no./plant, 1000 seed weight and biological yield.

A green house experiment with four compost to soil (MC10, MC20, MC30, MC50), vermicompost to soil ratios (MCW10, MCW20, MCW30, MCW50) and the control (soil) was carried out to investigate the effects of municipal solid waste compost (MC) and vermicompost produced from it (MCW) on psyllium. Treatments MC20 and MCW20 compared to the control, showed 7% and 23.5% increase in plant height respectively. MCW20 compared to MC20 showed an increase of 33%, and both when compared to the control increased the spike length by 28.4 and 3.4% respectively. Highest number of spike per plant in MCW20 had a significant increase comparing to other treatments, and the control (23.5%). Grain weight per spike was highest in MCW20 and lowest in MCW50 and both had 20% increase and 16.8% decrease respectively compared to the control. Number of grain per spike of MCW20 and MCW50 increased by 14% and decreased by 16% respectively when compared to the control. Grain weight per plant of MCW20 compared to MC20, proved to be superior by 37.8 increases and with respect to the control both showed an increase of 48.5% and 7.7%, respectively. Straw weight per plant of MCW30 and MCW20 treatments was highest. 1000 grain weight in MCW20 increased significantly when compared to other treatments and the control (+29.3%). Grain to straw weight ratio is usually considered detrimental in finding the treatments’ effect on more production of grain or straw, vermicompost (MCW20) proved to be superior by 39.4% and 24% compared to municipal solid waste compost (MC20) and the control respectively in producing more grain than straw. The best urban solid waste compost-soil mixture was found at 20/80 ratio for vermicompost preparation which proved its superiority in almost all parameters when compared to other treatments.
