To evaluate biomass and oil percentage at flowering stage in different accessions of medicinal plants Satureja spicigera (C. Koch) Boiss. (spic1, spic2, spic3)and S. sahendica Bornm. (sah1, sah2, sah3, sah4, sah5, sah6)under dry farming condition, an experiment was carried out based on three-replicated randomized complete block design in Damavand, Iran in 2014. Variance analysis showed significant differences (P<0.01) between two species for all the traits with the higher values for S. spicigera. Based on means comparison, higher dry shoot weight per plant(108.5 g) was detected in S. spicigera compared to S. sahendica with 25.82g. The highest amount of dry shoot weight per plant was obtained from spic2 accession (183.5g) in S. spicigera and from sah2 (45.51 g) in S. sahendica.Also, S. spicigera showed higher oil content (2.65%) compared to S. sahendica with 1.34%. Spic2 with the highest amount of oil (2.90%, 36.10 kg/ha) could be the best accession for cultivation under dry farming condition of Damavand. Considering lower plant canopy diameter in S. sahendica (32.19 cm) compared to S. spicigera (54.90cm), biomass and oil yield increase is possible with higher plant density. Furthermore, considering dry shoot weigh, plant height, plant canopy and day to flowering as selection indices, sah2 could be proposed as superior genotype of S. sahendica for dry land farming in Damavand or similar climates.

Plant essential oils are used in a wide range of pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics and hygienic products. Satureja sahendica Bornm is an endemic aromatic plant in Iran. In traditional medicine, it has analgesic and anti-infection properties. Savory is used for treatment of chest discomfort, cough, wasting and rheumatic pain. Previous researches showed that the main compounds of Satureja Sahendica essential oil were ρ-cymene, thymol, carvacrol and γ-terpinene. Since different drying and distillation methods affect oil yield and composition of aromatic plants, in this study, to investigate the effect of drying methods, the aerial parts of Satureja Sahendica were collected from Agricultural Research farm in Qazvin, at full flowering stage. The plant materials were dried by different methods (oven 30°C, oven 40°C, oven 50°C and shade). The essential oils of each treatment were obtained by hydro- distillation in three replicates. The oils were analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS. Oil yield and the percentage of main components were compared statistically by Duncan's Multiple Range Test in SAS software. Results showed that oil yields, percentage of thymol and total phenolic compounds in essential oils were not different statistically in oven 30°C , oven 40°C and shade, but drying in oven 50°C produced lower oil yield. The percentage of thymol and total phenolic compounds was higher in oven 50°C. Statistical analysis showed that the oil yield obtained from hydro-distillation method (1/45%) was higher than that of the other two methods (at 1% level), while the highest values of thymol and carvacrol were obtained by steam distillation (at 5% level).

Satureja sahendica Bornm.is an endemic aromatic species in Iran. It isused very extensively in folk medicine of southern parts ofIran. In this study, chemicalcomposition of cultivated S. sahendica was investigated for the first time. Three accessions of S. sahendica collected from natural sites in Qazvin province and cultivated in research farm of Qazvin Research Station in 2005. An experiment was undertaken to determine the oil production of S. sahendica in complete randomized block design with three replications. Accessions consisted of Arochan, Abgarm and Shenein. Aerial parts of wild and cultivated plants harvested at flowering stage in 2007. Essential oils of dried aerial parts were distilled with water for 3 hours. Statistical analysis showed significant difference between cultivated and wild plants of accessions. In natural site, Shenien had the highest essential oil content (3.3%) and then Abgarm (3.0%) and Arochan with 2.21% was the least. In cultivated plants accessions had not similar trend in different harvests. Abgarm samples at first and second cuttings and Arochan samples in third cutting showed the highest essential oil contents. There was high difference between cultivated and wild accessions of Shenien. Thymol was 35 to 36% at cultivated and wild samples, while among cultivated plants, Abgarm sample in third cutting showed the highest amount of thymol (49.6%). Second cutting of Arochan sample and first harvest of Shenien sample had 38.8 and 38.1 % thymol respectively. Carvacrol in wild plants was nearly 1% and was higher than cultivated plants.
