This research was aimed to evaluate the effects of aqueous extract of Aloe vera L., on motoneuron survival, P75NTR and BDNF expression. Twenty-Four Sprague-Dawley rats were obtained from Razi Institute. They were divided into four groups:1-laminectomy ((T9-T11 vertebra)+injection of Aloe vera extract. 2- laminectomy+injection Aloe vera extract+compression. 3- laminectomy+injection of saline normal. 4- laminectomy+injection of normal saline + compression. Intraprituneal injection continued for four weeks. After four weeks, they were sacrificed. Spinal cord motoneurons were counted and their morphometry was studied. Expression P75NTR and BDNF were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Results showed that compression caused motoneurons reduction with hematoma among the cells and in cavitation. The aqueous extract of Aloe vera caused to decrease the motoneurons death and increase the BDNF expression (p ≤ 0.05). In the second group, despite increasing expression of P75NTR, motoneuron death decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) which may be due to the dual role of the receptor or various properties of Aloe vera. The immunomodulatory effect of Aloe vera and multiple action of P75 in survival or motoneuron death in different times of life were confirmed in this research.

In the present study the antimicrobial, antioxidative, hematologic and cytotoxic properties of Citrus limon L. essential oil were studied. The bacterial strains sensitive to Citrus limon L. oil were in the following order: E. coli> K. pneumonia> S. aureus> Streptococcus faecalis> Candida albicans> P. aeruginosa .The minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of the fresh oil were determined. The essential oils had good bactericidal and bacteriostatic properties except for P. aeruginosa. Antioxidative property of the oil was carried out by using beta-carotene bleaching test and the results were compared to the standard synthetic antioxidants. Lipid peroxidation inhibitions were comparable or higher than the synthetic antioxidant BHT and BHA. The oil concentration required for 50% free radical scavenging (IC50) was 22.81 μg/ml with total phenol contents of 57.43 μg GAE/mg for C. limon L. oil. Ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) in the blood sera of the rats gavaged with a daily dose of 100 µl oil increased. Therapeutic effects were noted as a result of feeding the rats with lemon essential oil. The volatile oil of lemon displayed cytotoxic effects on the human tumor cell line (Hela cells) and peripheral blood cells with the IC50 of 0.97 and 0.57μg/ml respectively. The results showed that the lemon oil might be consumed with precautions after dose determination.

One of the most important intestinals, especially in developing countries is Salmonella infection. Today, antimicrobial resistance is increased and we need new antimicrobial drugs. One of these drugs is herbal drugs. The effects of garlic extract on Salmonella typhimurium infection were studied. 60 Dutch-polish rabbits were divided in 3 equal groups. The rabbits inoculated with 1011 colony forming unit orally. After 48 hours, two groups treated with 20 mg/kg and 40 mg/kg aqueous garlic extracts three times a day. Clinical manifestations are heart rate, weight, temperature and bowel habitus were evaluated after 24, 48, 72, 96 and 168 hours after treatment and at similar times in untreated group. Heart rate, temperature and bowel habitus status were significantly different in 3 groups and different days (p=0.000). Weight did not change significantly (p>0.05). Garlic extract decreased clinical manifestations in salmonella typhimurium infected rabbits. As a result, clinical trials for further studies.
