A range of methods are applied to enhance secondary metabolism in medicinal plants. Treatment of the plants with elicitors is one of these approaches. Salicylic acid (SA) exerts a positive impact on plant growth and yield. The present study, as a biannual field experiment, investigates the response of peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) to different rates of SA under different regimes of nitrogen nutrition during years of 2014-2015. The experiment was made as a random complete block design based on split-plot with three replicates. The treatments included nitrogen fertilization rate as the main factor (0, 70, 140, 210, and 280 kg N ha-1 applied as urea) and salicylic acid, as the sub factor, was spayed at different concentrations (0, 100, 200, and 300 μM). In both years, the highest nitrate reductase activity was found in the roots of the plants treated with 200 μM SA and fertilized with 280 kg N ha-1. Interestingly, the foliar activity of the enzyme was influenced only by nitrogen, whereas the highest rate of activity was determined using 280 kg N ha-1 (2.87 and 2.82 μM nitrite g-1 FW h-1, respectively in the first and second year). Higher concentration of SA caused to increased content of nitrogen and free amino acid in the plants fertilized with higher rates of nitrogen. Nitrate, total phenol, and soluble carbohydrates content of leaf was reduced in both years as the result of high rate of nitrogen and high concentration of SA applied. In the first and the second year, the highest fresh yields (3316.2 and 3480.7 g m-2, respectively), the highest dry yields (811.7 and 855.6 g m-2, respectively) and essence (13.01 and 15.2 mL m-2, respectively) were obtained through annual application of 210 kg N ha-1. Collectively, the application of 210 kg N ha-1 together with SA (200μM) is recommended to achieve desired quantitative and qualitative yield.

In order to study the effect of drought stress and planting date on some traits of chichory (Cichorium intybus L.), an experiment was conducted in a split plot design using randomized complete blocks design with three replications at the Agricultural Research Center of Islamic Azad University, Birjand Branch in 2011-2012. The factors included were irrigations levels (%100, %75, %50 and %25 ET0) and planting date (16 March, 2 April and 26 April). Results showed that all traits were significantly affected by drought stress, except R/S. The highest plant height, root length, width and branches number, shoot dry yield, root dry yield, total dry biomass, R/S were achieved under %100 ET0 and the highest water productivity was achieved under %25 ET0. According to mean comparisons, the highest values for all traits, except R/S, were recorded for the planting date of 16 March. The interaction effects of factors were also significant for branches number, stem dry yield, shoot dry yield, root dry yield and water productivity. Totally, the highest yield and water productivity were obtained for the planting date of 6 March. In addition, no significant difference was recorded between the treatments of %50 ET0 and %100 ET0 in 16 March in terms of total dry biomass. Therefore, %50 ET0 could be recommended especially in water deficit condition.

In order to investigate the effects of sowing date and planting density on some of the growth characteristics of Valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.) and didrovaltrate content, an experiment was conducted from 2005-2006 at Experimental Farm in Abureyhan Campus, University of Tehran. The experiment performed in split plot form based on a complete randomized block design with four replications. The main factor was the sowing date with three levels (11 August, 1 and 22 September) and sub factor was plant density with three levels (40000, 80000 and 120000 plants/ hectare). Seeds of valerian provided from Medicinal Plants Research Division of Shahid Beheshti University. Didrovaltrate amount was measured by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that sowing date and planting density had significant effect on root and rhizome length and diameter and percentage of didrovaltrate. The interaction effects of sowing date and planting density had significant difference on percentage of didrovaltrate, but no significant effect on other characters was seen. The highest root and rhizome length was obtained from sowing date of 11th August and 120000 plants per hectare and the highest diameter of root and rhizome were obtained from the combination of 11th August and 40000 plants per hectare. The results showed that maximum amount of didrovaltrate was obtained from the combination of 22nd September and 40000 plants per hectare.

Salvia leriifolia (Lamiaceae) is an endemic plant of Khorasan and Semnan province with antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic and antinociceptive properties. In this research, antioxidant activity of root and leaves of S. leriifolia were investigated at different stages of plant growth and development and finally the best time of harvesting for obtaining the maximum antioxidant activity was introduced. For this purpose, plant root and leaves were harvested at vegetative (mid March), flowering (mid April) and ripen seed phases (late May) Then, antioxidant activity in metanolic extract of root and leaves were measured by rancimat method at 110°C. Statistical analysis was performed according to the JMP software. The results showed that maximum antioxidant activity of root and leaves are coincident with vegetative and flowering phase. In vegetative phase, antioxidant activity of the root were significantly higher than the leaves .On the other hand, antioxidant properties of the leaves were markedly stronger than the roots at flowering phase. There was no significant difference between antioxidant activity of the roots and leaves in ripen seed phase. Therefore, it seems that March and April are the best time for obtaining the maximum antioxidant activity of root and leaves, respectively.
