In order to investigate the effect of sowing date and nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer on the seed flavonoid content, qualitative and germination characteristics of lady’s mantle (Lallemantia royleana Benth.), a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design with three replications was conducted in 2013-2014 crop year. Experimental factors included sowing date at two levels (autumn and spring) and chemical fertilizer at three levels (without fertilizer, half application of required fertilizer (23 kg ha-1 pure N+ 50.6 kg ha-1 P2O5) and full application of required fertilizer (46 kg ha-1 pure N+ 101.2 kg ha-1 P2O5). Flavonoid measurement of the seeds was performed weekly from flowering to seed ripening. The results of the mean comparison showed that the highest seed germination percentage was obtained at autumn sowing (74.8%) with an increase of 11.6% compared to spring sowing and at the full application of required fertilizer (88.6%) with an increase of 73.4% compared to without fertilizer. The application of chemical fertilizer and autumn cultivation of lallemantia significantly increased the percentage of seed mucilage compared to control. Seven days after flowering, the highest flavonoid content was obtained at spring sowing (0.264 mg quercetin per g sample) with an increase of 63.97% compared to autumn sowing, and at no fertilizer treatment (0.282 mg quercetin per g sample) with an increase of 90.54% compared to the full application of required fertilizer (0.148 mg quercetin per g sample). Twenty-eight days after flowering, the highest flavonoid content was obtained at spring sowing (0.554 mg quercetin per g sample) and no fertilizer treatment (0.629 mg quercetin per g sample). In general, the results showed that the autumn sowing date and full application of required chemical fertilizer increased the seed quality in terms of mucilage percentage and germination, but the spring sowing date and no fertilizer treatment increased the flavonoid content of lallemantia seeds.

This research was aimed to study the effects of different levels of fertilizer and vermicompost on performance indicators and the amount of hypoglycemic active ingredient (trigonelline) in fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) for domestic and pharmaceutical uses. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with two treatments and five replicates in comparison with the control group. The treatments consisted of three levels of NPK fertilizer (5, 10 and 15 grams) and vermicompost (10, 20 and 30% by volume), and the control pots containing garden soil with no treatments. The plant height, leaf number, leaf length, dry weight, fresh weight, and the amount of trigonelline were measured and evaluated. Our results showed that high levels of vermicompost and fertilizer increased the growth characteristics and the amount of trigonelline. According to the results, the highest concentration of trigonelline, shoot dry weight, shoot fresh weight, and leaf length were recorded for the treatments of 30% vermicompost; 15 g fertilizer; 15g fertilizer and 30% vermicompost; and 15 g fertilizer and 30% vermicompost, respectively. In general, 15g chemical fertilizer and 30 % by volume of vermicompost were the best treatments to increase the concentration of trigonelline and growth factors. Thus, to avoid the hazards of chemical fertilizers, the use of vermicompost is recommended for the cultivation of Fenugreek.

To study some quantitative and qualitative traits of Cucurbita pepo L. under fertilizer and water deficit stress, a trial was conducted in the research field of Tarbiat Modares University in 2011 and 2012 cropping years. In this study, the experiment was performed in factorial randomized completely block design with three replications. and water deficit at three levels (normal irrigation, withholdingirrigation at milk stage, withholdingirrigation and spraying sodium chlorate at milk stage). Results showed that nitrogen fertilizer treatment significantly affected all traits studied except seed number and stress treatment had significant effects on all traits except seed number, seed length, and stearic acid content at 1% level of significance. In this study, increasing water stress reduced the content of all traits studied except linoleic acid content. In addition, increased levels of nitrogen fertilizer led to the decreased content of all traits studied. The highest values for fruit and seed weight, seed width, seed diameter, oil, linoleic, oleic, palmetic, and stearic acid were obtained at a nitrogen fertilizer level of 60kg.ha-1. Totally, nitrogen fertilizer (60kg.ha-1) and control irrigation treatments are recommended as the most suitable treatments to gain maximum seed yield.

In order to investigate the response of quantitative and qualitative characteristics of isabgol (Plantago ovata Forssk.) to different levels of cow manure and nitrogen fertilizers, an experiment was conducted in a randomized complete blocks design with four replications at the research farm, Shahrekord University in 2011. Treatments consisted of: control (no fertilizer) and three levels of nitrogen fertilizer (30, 60 and 90 N/ha in the form of urea) and three levels of cow manure (14.29, 28.58 and 42.78 Mg/ha). Results showed that there were no significant differences in quantitative and qualitative characteristics between cow manure and urea fertilizer applications. The highest grain yield and aboveground biomass (1618 and 9464 kg/ha, respectively) were observed in 90 kg N/ha from urea fertilizer, but it had no significant difference with that of the 42.87 Mg/ha of cow manure. The application of 42.87 Mg/ha of cow manure resulted in the greatest seed mucilage amount (%26.75), swelling factor (10.38 ml) and mucilage yield (415 kg/ha), but swelling factor and mucilage yield of this treatment had no significant difference with that of the 90 kg N/ha from urea fertilizer. In general, it is concluded that the use of cow manure in isabgol production, not only does not reduce grain and mucilage yield of isabgol but also it can produce high- mucilage seeds, resulting in reduced pollution caused by the use of chemical fertilizers.

This research was aimed to investigate the effects of different amounts of NPK fertilizers on quantitative and qualitative traits of Matricaria chamomilla L. The experiment was conducted during 2007-2008 in Barij Essence Company of Kashan in a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications.Treatments consisted of three levels of N (0, 50, 100 kgha-1), P2O5 (0, 25, 50 kgha-1) and K2O (0, 25, 50 kgha-1). Plant height, number of flower per plant, number of lateral branches, dry and fresh weight per plant, flower yield/m2, flower diameter, essential oil percentage, and chamazulene were measured. N levels showed significant differences for the number of flower per plant, fresh weight per plant, number of lateral branches, flower yield/m2 and dry and fresh weight of flower (p < 0.05). Analysis of data showed significant differences for fresh weight per plant under different levels of P2O5 (p < 0.05). K levels showed no significant differences for all traits. Interaction of N and P2O5 levels revealed significant differences for fresh and dry weight per plant and flower yield/m2 (p < 0.01). Interaction of N and K2o5 was significant for flower diameter (p < 0.05). Analysis of mean comparison for flower yield per m2 showed that the highest flower yield was obtained at 50 kg/ha N and 25 kg/ha P2O5, and the lowest flower yield was obtained at 100 kg/ha N and 50 kg/ha P2O5. NPK fertilizers did not affect chamazulene and essential oil. In conclusion, Matricaria chamomilla L. requires few nutrient elements.

Mint (Mentha piperita L.), belonging to Labiatae family, is one of the most important plants, which is used widely in terms of pharmaceutical, food and health. Essential oils and compounds are important components of the plant and are severely affected by agricultural agents. In this study, the effects of nitrogen fertilizer and harvesting time on yield and yield components, essential oil and menthol were studied. A split-plot design with three replications was used. The measured traits included leaf length, leaf width, plant height, fresh weight per square meter in the first and second harvest, fresh weight of 100 leaves, essential and oil menthol of the first second harvest, shoot yield and essential oil yield per hectare. Variance analysis results showed that different levels of nitrogen and harvesting time had a significant effect on all traits except for leaf length. The interaction of nitrogen and harvesting time showed a significant difference for all traits except leaf length and width. Mean comparison of traits showed that the plant height, fresh weight per square meter, fresh weight of 100 leaves, essential oil of the first harvest, menthol of the first and second harvest, shoot yield per hectare and essential oil yield increased with increasing of nitrogen intake. Mean comparison of different harvesting times showed that the highest shoot yield and essential oil yield were obtained at budding stage. The interaction between different levels of nitrogen fertilizer and harvesting time also showed that the highest shoot yield per hectare was obtained by the application of 200 kilograms of nitrogen fertilizer per hectare at budding stage. The highest amount of menthol was obtained at consumption level of 300 kg nitrogen fertilizer per hectare and at 50 % flowering. In addition, according to the obtained results, essential oil percentage of the second harvests showed a significant decreasing trend. Overall, results showed that the highest fresh yield per hectare and essential oil were obtained at budding stage and consumption level of 200 kg/ha nitrogen fertilizer.

Aloe vera gel and extract has been used in cosmetics and medicine since ancient times. Aloe vera gel has numerous biological and physiological properties including treatment of burns and skin wounds, anti wrinkle effect, stopping the growth of some bacteria and parasites, resistance against chemical synthesis due to the presence of Antrakinon compounds and stopping AIDS virus activity. In order to study the effects of planting density and nitrogen fertilizer on the active ingredients (Aloenin, barbaloin, and Maleic acid) in the medicinal plant Aloe vera L., an experiment was done in Mazandaran, Noshahr in 2009. The experiment was performed as factorial on the basis of randomized complete blocks design in three replications. Nitrogen treatment (urea fertilizer, 46% net nitrogen) was in three levels of 50, 100 and 150 kg/ha and density treatment was in three levels of 2, 4 and 6 plant/m². After extracting the gel from Aloe barbadensis leaf, the amounts of effective material (Aloenin, Barbaloin and Maleic acid) were evaluated by High Performance (Pressure) Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The highest amount of the active substances and maleic acid obtained from the treatment of 150kg/ha and density of 4 plants /m2 was as follows respectively: 1133/3µg/g aloenin, 429/3 µg/g barbaloin and 312 g/100g maleic acid.

In order to investigation the effect of different levels of nitrogen fertilizer on yield of Melissa officinalis L., an experiment was conducted under greenhouse condition in Alborz Research Station in Karaj/Iran in 2003/2004. The research carried out with 6 levels of foliar application of nitrogen using of completely randomized design with three replications. The treatments included 0, 3%, 4.5%, 6%, 7.5 % and 9% nitrogen fertilizer and applied in 3 stages on plant. Results showed that effect of different levels of foliar application on yield was significant. The level of 4.5% had a higher performance (85.8 g/ shoot per plant) to others. Reduction of yield at levels of 7.5% and 9.0% was explained by Micherlich law. Foliar application caused to increase of yield and decreasing of agroecosystem pollution. Foliar application was a suitable approach in sustainable agriculture.
