Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) as a valuable crop is cultivated in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran. It is used in food for color and flavor and also in medicine. Optimum mother corm density and depth is one the most crucial factors determining daughter corm generation and flower yield. For this purpose, this research was aimed to study the effects of planting density and depth of corm on stigma yield and daughter corms production traits during 2012-2014 in Mahidasht, Kermanshah province. The study was conducted in a factorial experiment based on randomized complete blocks design with four different planting densities (3, 6, 9, 12 cm) and three planting depths of corm (10, 15, 20 cm) in three replications. Traits including flower number, flower fresh weight, fresh and dry weight of stigma and style, stigma and style length, leaf weight, the number and average weight of daughter corm were measured. Analysis of variance showed that the effect of planting density and depth of mother corm was significant on total traits. The interaction effect between planting density and planting depth on some traits (average weight of daughter corm and stigma and style length) was significant. The highest flower number, fresh flower weight, total fresh and dry weight of stigma and style (2.09 and 0.5 gr/m2, respectively), leaf weight, and daughter corm number were obtained in planting density of 6 cm and planting depth of 15 cm. The highest length of stigma and style of saffron was achieved in planting density of 9 cm and planting depth of 15 cm, and the average weight of daughter corm was obtained in planting density of 12 cm and planting depth of 15 cm. Therefore, the planting density of 6 cm and planting depth of 15 cm, having the highest effect on fresh and dry weight of stigma, are recommended.

To study the effect of planting date and density on the yield, yield components and allicin content of two garlic ecotypes (Allium sativum L.), an experiment was conducted in a farmland in Damghan, Iran during the 2011-2012 growing season. The experiment was arranged as a split-split-plot in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Three planting dates (17-Oct, 11-Nov, 6-Mar) were main plots. Two ecotypes (Kavire Damghan and Hamedan) were subplots, and three planting densities (35, 45 and 55 plants per m2) were sub-sub-plots. The effect of planting date on plant height, fresh and dry weight of bulbs, yield, diameter and dry weight of cloves was significant, and delay in planting date decreased these traits. The values of dry and fresh weight of bulbs, plant yield, dry weight and diameter of cloves and allicin content were significantly higher in Hamedan ecotype in comparison with Kavire Damghan ecotype. The planting density had significant effect on fresh and dry weight of bulb and dry weight and diameter of cloves, as these traits were reduced by increasing the density. Furthermore, the effect of planting density on height and yield of plant and number of cloves in bulb was significant. To achieve the highest fresh yield (1.7kg.m-2) and dry yield (0.27 kg.m-2), 17-Oct was identified as the best planting date. Hamedan ecotype was more favorable as it had higher bulb fresh and dry weight, diameter and dry weight of cloves, allicin contents and yield. The most desirable planting density was 55 plants per m2 due to having higher values of plant height, number of cloves in bulb and yield.

In order to investigate the effect of sowing date and planting density on the essential oil content and compositionof valerian, this experiment was conducted in the years of 2005-2006 at Experimental Farm in Abureyhan Campus, University of Tehran. This experiment performed in split plot form based on a complete randomized block design with four replications. The main factor was the sowing date with three levels (11th August, 1st and 22nd September), sub factor was the density with three levels (40000, 80000 and 120000 plants/ hectare). Seeds of valerian providedbyresearch departmenton medicinal plants in University of Shahid Beheshti. After isolating essential oil from dried roots by the hydrodistillation method, composition of essential oil were identified by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/Mass spectrometry analysis. Number of 87 composition were identified in essential oil. Bornyl acetate, valerenal, camphene and valeranone were the highest percentage in other compositions of essential oil. According to the results, sowing date and planting density had significant effect on essential oil percentage and its composition (bornyl acetate, valerenal, camphene and valeranone) (P≤0.01). Interaction of sowing date and planting density had significant effect only on essential oil percentage (P≤0.05). Final results showed that the highest amount of essential oil percentage and its composition (bornyl acetate, valerenal, camphene, and valeranone) was obtained on 22nd September and 40000 plants per hectare.
