This study aimed at determining the optimal cultivation pattern of medicinal plant species using hybrid model of AHP-TOPSIS (Analytic Hierarchy Process-Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) in Qom province. First, among the various, diverse and priority criteria for determining the optimal cultivation pattern of medicinal plants, according to the ecological and economic conditions of the study area and with a survey of a number of experts familiar with medicinal plants, screening of criteria and options that were more important and effective in this regard, was done. Finally, six criteria including heat stress threshold, cold stress threshold, soil texture, water EC, water needs, and economic issues and 10 options including Thymus vulgaris, Matricaria chamomilla, Berberis vulgaris, Crocus sativus, Cuminum cyminum, Cichorium intybus, Sesamum indicum, Echium amoenum, Rosa damascena, and Mentha spicata were selected. At first, the weight of each criterion was determined by the paired comparisons with an incompatibility rate of 0.02 using the AHP model and Expert Choice software. Then the TOPSIS technique was used. The results showed that among the criteria for determining the optimal cultivation pattern of medicinal plants in Qom province, the highest and lowest weight belonged to the economic issues (cost-benefit) and the soil texture criteria, respectively. Also, C. sativus was the best among the options, and R. damascena, C. cyminum, and E. amoenum were placed in the next ranks. This study showed that the hybrid model of AHP-TOPSIS can be used to evaluate and prioritize the options for determining the optimal cultivation pattern of medicinal plants and use the strengths of both models and cover their weaknesses.

The abundant usage from medicinal and aromatic plants shows the place and role of these valuable resources in the world. At first, we should collect and identify all of the medicinal and aromatic plants in our region. The Qom province has different condition in climatic, topography and pedology and so it has a different species of medicinal and aromatic plants. At first Qom floristic list was prepared and after a literature review the aromatic plants were identified. After this stage, some of studding site were considered and then data was recorded because of consideration to phonological condition of aromatic plants. Then ecological parameters were measured. The result showed that 39 species of about 230 medicinal plants were categorized as aromatic plants. These plants belonged to 5 families and 20 genus. 28 species were in semi-stepp region, 4 species were in stepp region and 7 species were common in both semi- stepp and stepp regions. The Labiatae had most frequency species (22) and other families are composite 12, Umbelliferea 3, Verbenaceae 1, Ephedraceae 1 species.

Medicinal plants are used as by-products of rangeland in Iran from many years ago. Identification of ecological properties of theseplants is necessary for sustainable and economic utilization from potential in natural resources. Ferula gumosa is a medicinal plant in mountains of Iran that has very important economical of value. The purpose of this research was consideration of ecological properties and some chemical components of Ferula gumosa for identification and protection from the main provenances in Qom province. This research conducted in Qom rangeland ecosystems from 1996 for 3 years. First the distribution map of Ferula was prepared by extant references and field study then a key area about 1 ha was selected in each provenance. The vegetation parameters were considered by transect-quadrate method also the distribution of root system and phenological stages were studied with selection of 20 stand of plants. Soil sampling to take the measurement of organic material, pH and EC was done from 0-15 and 15-30 cm depths also plant sampling to determine nutrient value which was accomplished. The results indicated the provenance of Ferula can be found in semi-steppic regions with elevation of more than 2000 meters, in soils with light texture, in pH between 7.5-7.8 and EC 0.06 to 0.479 mmohs/cm and from geological standpoint in granite and granodiorite. This species can tolerate temperature between –23.5º to 35º C and annual precipitation about 270-320 mm is suitable for that. Root/herbage ratio was between 0.7-0.73 and total digestible nutrients of Ferula is higher than another rangeland plants. This plant has great value because of its high nutrient and economical value.
