To study the effects of different nitrogen levels (0, 70, 140, and 210 mg l-1) on some growth, biochemical, and nutrient uptake (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) characteristics and essential oil content in sage (Salvia officinalis L.) under hydroponic conditions, a pot experiment was conducted based on a completely randomized design with four replications in the research greenhouse of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in 2019. The results of means comparison showed that with increasing the nitrogen level, the plant growth characteristics increased, so that the 210 mg l-1 N treatment decreased the stem diameter, number of branches, nodes, and leaves, length of internodes, length and leaf width, fresh and stem dry weight, fresh and aerial parts dry weight, and aerial parts dry weight to root dry weight ratio by 54.19, 72.59, 39.49, 82.52, 51.42, 72.20, 71.46, 95.17, 90.31, 95.82, 92.30, and 83.46%, respectively compared to the no N application. The application of 210 mg l-1 N increased the relative content of leaf water (RWC), proline, and essential oil content by 9.57, 266.6, and 14.87% and decreased the electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde by 30.45 and 51.51%, respectively compared to the no N application. Also, the lowest N level decreased the K, P, and N content by 32.65, 85.13, and 56.89%, respectively compared to the highest N level. The results of this experiment showed that different N levels could have different effects on the growth and essential oil content of sage. Based on the present research findings, the application of 210 mg l-1 N could be recommended for the sage cultivation due to the improving effects on the studied traits of the plant.

In order to investigate the effects of Plant Growth Promothing Rhizobacteria (PGPR) on growth, yield, flowering and biochemical content of marigold (Calendula officinalis L.), an experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with five treatments and four replications during the 2015-2016 in the Faculty of Agriculture of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz. The treatments included Entrobacter closea R13, Entrobacter closea R33, Pseudomonas sp., chemical fertilizers (NPK), and control (no fertilizer). The results of the experiment showed that the highest flower number per square meter, leaf number, stem branches, receptacle diameter, and capitol diameter were observed in E. closea R13, while the highest capitol fresh and dry weight was found in E. closea R33. Moreover, the most leaf phosphorus and nitrogen content, and leaf chlorophyll and carotenoids content were observed in the plots incubated with E. closea R13. The highest and lowest total phenolic content was found in the Entrobacter treatment and control, respectively. Mean comparison of treatment effects showed that the effects of E.closea R33 were similar to E. closea R13 in most parameters and there was no significant difference between them. According to the positive and additive effects of PGPR on calendula plants, the PGPR could be recommended as an alternative to chemical fertilizers to reduce the consumption of chemical fertilizers and guaranty the production of medicinal plants, free of chemicals.

In order to evaluate essential oil yield and composition of fifteen accessions of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), an experiment was conducted in the experimental field of department of horticultural science of Shahid Chamran university of Ahvaz as a randomized complete block design with fifteen treatments (accessions) and three replications. Accessions were green (Yazd, Canada, Ramhormoz, Jahrom, Shiraz, Shahr rey, Dashtestan and Neyshabour), purple (Jahrom, Shiraz, Ramhormoz and Dashtestan), Golkhosheai, Thyrsiflora and Goldomaghrabi. Leaf yield, essential oil content, yield and components were evaluated. Results showed that there was a significant difference among accessions (P≤0.01) for measured traits. The maximum leaf yield was recorded in Golkhosheai and Goldomaghrabi accessions (613.6 and 550.33 gr.m2). The highest essential oil content was observed in Thyrsiflora (3.16%), Golkhosheai (2.93%) and Goldomaghrabi (2.07%) accessions and the highest essential oil yield was obtained in Golkhosheai, Thyrsiflora and Goldomaghrabi accessions (17.95, 14.72 and 11.42 gr.m2, respectively). According to essential oil analysis by GC-MS, approximately 32 compounds were identified in the essential oil of various basil accessions. Main essential oil compositions were linalool (0.12-68.43%), methyl chavicol (0-55.28%), geraniol (0-33.39%), geranial (0-42.09%), limonene (0-18.03%), methyl eugenol (0.38-4.85%), beta-caryophyllane (0-4.57%) and cubenol (0-6.22%). Essential oil of purple (Jahrom, Shiraz, Ramhormoz and Dashtestan) and Thyrsiflora accessions had the highest amount of methyl chavicol. Essential oil of Golkhosheai, Goldomaghrabi and Canada accessions was rich in linalool. Essential oil of green (Yazd, Canada, Ramhormoz, Jahrom, and Neyshabour) accessions had more geraniol and geranial than other accessions. Overall, the results of this study showed that each accession had a unique characteristic that can be used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food industries.

In order to evaluate the compatibility of some borage (Borago officinalis L.) populations and cultivars to Ahvaz weather condition, an experiment was carried out based on a randomized complete block design with eight treatments and three replications. The treatments were six populations (Ahvaz, Mashad, Andimeshk, Ghazvin, Esfehan and Mazandaran) and two cultivars (F1 and F2). Plant height, number of branches, leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight of plants were measured at the full flowering stage. The one-thousand seed weight, seed and biological yields were measured at the end of the growing period. The seed oil was extracted by Soxhelt system and analyzed by gas chromatoghraphy (GC). Results showed that there was a significant difference between populations and cultivars for all morphological traits (p≥0.01). The highest and lowest amounts of leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight of plant, biological yield, and oil content were obtained in F1 and Esfehan population, respectively. Palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, α-linolenic,γ-linolenic, arachidonic and erucicacids were detected in all populations and cultivars. The highest (43.41%) and lowest (17.21%) amounts of linoleic acid were observed in Andimeshk and Mashad, respectively. Mashad population had the maximum amount (60.54%) of oleic acid. The lowest amount of oleic acid (18.49%) was recorded in Andimeshk. The highest (15.25%) and lowest (7.96%) amounts of γ-linolenic acid were observed in F1 and Mashad, respectively. Mazandaran and Mashad populations had the maximum and minimum amounts of α-linolenic acid. The highest amount of palmitic and stearic acids was observed in Esfahan and Mazandaran populations, respectively. Mashad had the lowest amount of palmitic and stearic acids. According to the obtained results, further researches are recommended to increase the F1 cultivation inside Khuzestan province.

Holy basil (Ocimum sanctum L.), belonging to Lamiaceae family, is one of the most important medicinal plants. In order to evaluate the effect of foliar application of iron on the number and size of glandular trichomes and essential oil content, yield and composition of holy basil, an experiment was conducted at the research farm of Department of Horticultural Science, Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz based on randomized complete block design, with six treatments and three replications. The treatments were control, nano iron chelate (0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 g.L-1) and iron chelate (1 and 1.5g.L-1) fertilizers. Results showed that the effect of foliar application of iron fertilizers on all measured traits of holy basil was significant (p≥0.01).The highest number (19.76) and size (173.33μm2) of glandular trichomes, essential oil content (2.17%) and yield (14.74 kg.ha-1), and eugenol (33.27%) at first harvest were observed in plants sprayed with 1 g.l-1 nano iron chelate. The highest oil content (2.33%) and yield (12.75 kg.ha-1) and eugenol (41.51%) at second harvest were obtained in plant sprayed with 1 g.L-1 nano iron chelate. The lowest values of mentioned traits were obtained in control plant. Overall, since there was no significant difference between 1 and 1.5 g.L-1 nano iron chelate treatments, foliar application of plant with 1g.L-1 nano iron chelate is recommended for increasing morphological traits of holy basil.
